Alex Ovechkin, one of the NHL’s quiet good guys
Ovechkin is not only a star on the ice, but he is also shining off ice. Maybe it was his break up with his girlfriend, who left him with more free time, but he has been seen recently engaging in a number of charitable acts. But really, Ovi has always participates in the Caps’ Make-A-Wish efforts and annually plays in charity preseason games in Russia.
Alex Ovechkin is said to be supporting seven orphanages in his native country of Russia. He supplied an orphanage fro special-needs children in Novopetroskoye with a hockey rink and equipment. He also supported a sports school in Mordovia.
His mother is the source of all his good doing, as Ovechkin does not like to talk about it. He would rather be silent about his charity work. However, many of you probably remember that Ovechkin went on a sushi date with a 10-year-old girl who has Down’s syndrome. This was a wish of Ann’s and on September 11th Ovi surprised her with flowers, a personalized jersey, a tour of the dressing room and then a date. Anne told the Washington Post, “I think I’m going to marry him.”
It is always great to see players who have such talent on the ice use their fame and fortune to give back.
