FTHN Magazine’s July 1st NHL Winners and Losers

Jason Spezza is a Dallas Star (Zimbio)

Jason Spezza is a Dallas Star (Zimbio)

Yesterday was a wild day in the NHL. Over a half billion dollars were spent on 80 transactions and every hockey blogger in the world has put in for workman’s comp thanks to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Here’s a great recap done by NHL Network:

The biggest winners of the day:

  • St. Louis Blues landing Paul Stastny (4/$28M)
  • Vancouver Canucks signing Ryan Miller (3/$18M)
  • Chicago Blackhawks inking Brad Richards (1/$2M)
  • New York Rangers getting Dan Boyle (2/$9M)
  • Dallas Stars obtaining Jason Spezza in a trade and signing Ales Hemsky
  • Buffalo Sabres adding Matt Moulson, Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges
  • Minnesota Wild signing Thomas Vanek (3/$19.5M)

It’s hard to call anyone a loser on UFA day, but there were some head scratchers:

  • Detroit Red Wings not getting anyone they wanted
  • New York Islanders being rejected even after offering more money
  • Pittsburgh Penguins, who added 1 d-man in Ehrhoff but lost 2 to UFA
  • Edmonton Oilers giving a journeyman in Pouliot tons of cash (5/$20M)
  • Colorado Avalanche who lost Stastny and gave 3 years to Jarome Iginla

Of course, there is still plenty to do in the next few days and FTHN Magazine will ride it out. We hope you come along.

Below is a complete list of transaction for 7/1 from TSN.
