FTHN Report: Pierre McGuire Turned Down the Penguins GM Job
This morning on NHL Radio, NBC’s TV Analyst, Pierre McGuire said that he in essence turned down the Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager position.
“They made a decision and I made decision. And I’m comfortable saying that.” Pierre went on to explain that the Penguins GM job was temporary and they wanted someone to groom their young executive talent. New GM, Jim Rutherford said exactly that in his introduction press conference.
McGuire was extremely complimentary of the entire process and wanted the fans to understand just how involved Mario Lemieux was during the interviews. However, Pierre rejected the job because of his long term security with NBC.
Pierre has at least 5 plus years on his contract with NBC and if the Penguins weren’t willing to offer at least that much, the decision was easy for him. The Penguins did well in landing Jim Rutherford who is well seasoned on how to run an NHL team and will do a wonderful job grooming a successor.
